Start with a rough bird's-eye view of your bathroom on paper. Note where the walls are, where the door is (and which way it swings), the window if there is one, and the location of your main fixtures — toilet, vanity, shower, and tub.
Label each wall: Wall A, Wall B, Wall C, Wall D — starting from the wall where your toilet sits and going clockwise. Take photos of each wall and each fixture before you start measuring.
Example bathroom measurement sketch — toilet, vanity, shower with seat, and door marked with dimensions.
Measure each wall from corner to corner. Record measurements in inches, not feet. Take wall measurements at about 36 inches from the floor — the same height as a vanity countertop — since this is the most relevant reference point for planning your layout.
Also measure each wall in segments: from a corner to the edge of the door frame, across the door, and from the door to the next corner. Both the full wall length and the segments are useful for planning fixture placement.
| What to Measure | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Window width (trim to trim) | Affects tile layout and any wall niche planning |
| Window height (trim to trim) | Important if the window is inside or near the shower |
| Floor to bottom of window | Determines where tile work starts and stops |
| Door width (trim to trim) | Affects vanity and fixture placement nearby |
| Which way the door swings | A door swinging inward can limit layout options |
| Is there a window in the shower? | Requires waterproofing — affects tile and framing plan |
Bathroom fixtures have specific measurements that directly affect what's possible during a remodel. These are the most important numbers to get right:
| Fixture | What to Record |
|---|---|
| Toilet rough-in | Distance from the finished wall to the center of the drain — usually 12", but older Florida homes can be 10" or 14" |
| Toilet location | Which wall it's on and distance from the side wall to the toilet center |
| Vanity width | Width of the existing vanity or the space available |
| Vanity location | Which wall, and distance from the nearest corner |
| Shower / tub width | Width of the shower or tub space |
| Shower / tub length | Length (depth) of the shower or tub space |
| Shower / tub wall | Which wall it's against |
